Navigating Health with Naturopaths

Countless times I have left the doctor’s office feeling rushed and unheard. I know I am not alone. I love my naturopath. She is my cheerleader, the biggest missing piece in my wellness puzzle.
Think of your body as a garden. Physicians (MDs/DOs) are like skilled landscapers who trim weeds (symptoms) with quick fixes. Naturopaths? They’re the gardeners who nurture the soil, sunlight, and water—your diet, stress, sleep—to help you thrive naturally. They blend ancient remedies (herbs, nutrition) with modern science, focusing on why you feel off, not just silencing symptoms. They both use different tools with the same goal. This is how I see them and their differences:
Physicians: Masters of acute care (broken bones, infections) and pharmaceuticals.
Naturopaths: Experts in prevention and root causes (hormones, gut health), using tools like supplements, acupuncture, and lifestyle tweaks. Both matter! It’s not “either/or”—it’s “yes, and.”
Insurance coverage is patchy. Why? Naturopathy is often labeled “alternative,” and not all states license practitioners (check your state here).
Call your insurer—some plans cover licensed NDs.
Use HSA/FSA funds for visits.
Sliding-scale clinics exist!
I have been dismissed about fatigue, brain fog and aches? A 2018 survey found 40% of women 35-55+ turn to naturopaths when conventional care falls short. Why? Hormonal shifts, perimenopause, and autoimmune quirks often need a detective—not a prescription pad.
Finding Your Naturopath Match
Start Here: AANP’s Find a Doc Tool (licensed pros only).
Ask Around: Friends, yoga studios, or integrative clinics often have gems.
Vet Them: Ensure they’re licensed (if your state requires it) and vibe with your style.
Your First Visit: What to Expect
Time: 1-2 hours (!) of chatting—your history, diet, stress, everything.
Tests: Maybe saliva hormone panels or food sensitivity tests.
Plan: Custom herbs, dietary tweaks, mindfulness practices and follow-ups.
Pro tip: Bring a journal of symptoms—it’s your story, and they’ll listen.
Long-Term Perks: Beyond Quick Fixes
Root Causes: Tackle the “why” behind migraines or fatigue.
Prevention: Build resilience against future flares.
Sustainable Habits: Learn to cook anti-inflammatory meals, master stress with meditation (try Insight Timer for free guides).
NDs + MDs can collaborate! Share test results with both. Some MDs welcome integrative approaches; others may need gentle education. You’re the CEO of your health—curate a dream team.
However you navigate health—whether with an ND, MD, or both—trust your gut, ask questions, and remember: wellness is a marathon, not a sprint.
Your Next Step
Book a discovery call with a local ND.
Share this with a friend who’s felt “stuck” in their health.
Tonight: Unplug with tea + 5 minutes of mindful breathing. You’ve earned it.
🌿 Cheers to your whole, radiant health—body, mind, and spirit. 🌿
